SHAPE ART

We’ve been working on some Shape Art with Miss Simpson.  Here is the process we went through:

·         Drew our shapes
·         Traced over the shapes using vivid
·         Rubbed out the pencil lines
·         Chose three bright colours
·         Coloured the shapes, being careful not to go over the vivid lines

We are so proud of our finished work!

GEOLOGIST VISIT

This morning we had a special visit from Jon and Natalia the geologists from Massey University. They taught us lots about volcanoes and earthquakes. We are so excited to get stuck into our science learning after having them tell us about their experiences and sharing their knowledge.

Things we learnt about included:

-The different types of eruptions like a Caldera

-That the rocks that come from the volcanoes can tell us what type of eruption it was

-A lahar is the overflow of liquid (water) and rock just like wet concrete. It is like an overflow of a bath. These can be very dangerous.

- There are many more volcanoes in New Zealand than we expected

-Volcanoes helped shape New Zealand. For example, the Taranaki eruption shaped the West coast peak

We were so lucky to have an expert to learn from!

SCIENCE

WE ARE LEARNING ABOUT
VOLCANOES & EARTHQUAKES

Big Ideas
·    The Earth is very old and continuously changing
·    Landforms are continuously being built up and broken down through the process of tectonics and volcanism
·    The outer layer of the Earth is called the crust. The crust consists of tectonic plates, which are in very gradual motion

We started our Science learning with a brainstorm and an introduction experiment to show a representation of a volcano erupting.

SURPRISE VISIT

Straight after lunch we assembled on the field. No one told us what was going on. We got a big surprise when a helicopter landed on our school field. It was a rescue helicopter.
When it was landing we sat nervously as many of us thought it was coming to land on us!

During the student council events Halcombe School has been fundraising for the rescue helicopter fund. Alexander from Room 6 presented the money and gave a short speech.
The men answered many questions we had. We learnt the government provides half of the money needed to operate the rescue helicopter, while the community contributes the rest of the money.

Once we had finished asking questions we walked around the helicopter and had a closer look.

THEME BOOK SHARING

Today was the end of our inquiry topic “On the Move- Learning about the Past”. We proudly shared our learning through our theme book with the rest of the senior school. We got to learn about Ancient Egypt which Room 5 and 6 have been learning about by listening and asking questions.
Thanks Room 5 and 6 for sharing with us! Keep up the awesome learning.

INTERESTING INTERESTS BEFORE SCHOOL

Azriella loves her double denim. Today she arrived in triple denim!
She loves denim so much she can never go a day without a little bit here and there.

She even has a fact to share about denim:
-denim is used for jeans with a copper rivet to strengthen the pockets
Keep rocking the denim Azi!

Jason loves history and interesting facts. Today before school he shared his Gladiators book with Miss Campbell. He was surprised to see that there were girl gladiators too. We all agreed that Miss Campbell wouldn’t make the best gladiator especially with high heels.

Did you know...
-the name ‘Provocator’ means ‘challenger’
-some gladiators had to fight blind by wearing a helmet with no eye holes. To work out where his opponents are he needs to rely on his listening skills.

Thank you for sharing your interesting interests today
