After learning about the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" we wanted to see how much plastic rubbish we had in our lunchboxes today.
We also decided we need to make sure plastics are not getting out to sea from our Halcombe community. We have come up with a plan: We will go around Halcombe every Thursday for 10mins after lunch to collect rubbish. This is a great start for how we can help our polluted environment.
Once we realised the amount of plastic Room 4 uses within a week, we decided we need to try a lot better to pack in a environmental friendly way.
AIM: to reduce the use of non-biodegradable rubbish in our
lunchboxes
HOW WE THINK WE CAN ACHIEVE THIS:
·
Choose foods that do not have a package if possible
·
Replace glad-wrap for recyclable materials i.e. paper,
or use a container if there is one at home
·
When packing our lunch, think to ourselves: “Can I use
this wrapping more than once?” and ask “Is it really that important that this
piece of food is to be wrapped or bagged?”
We think this is a great start towards helping our polluted environment.
There was a lot of rubbish in are lunch boxes and think of that in ten years time that would be a lot of pollution in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Nice work picking some garbage that is around Halcombe!
ReplyDeleteWow! You must have gone in the right way to get all that rubbish and make sure we don't have a lot of pollution in Halcombe/New Zealand. In just 10 minutes a week is plenty and in a year there will be no more rubbish in Halcombe.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a really good idea and we will get a little bit more rubbish each time!
ReplyDeleteWe had people that picked rubbish up,spoted, and carried the bag.
ReplyDeleteWow Room4! Everyone did a god job of picking things up! There was lots of rubbish in the gutters, wasn't there?
ReplyDeleteWow! Room4 has their own little construction working for only 10minutes. We just about got three bags but our time ran out! I think we need to work on just putting our hands up not shouting out.
ReplyDeleteYou are right Georgia! We have our own little class job. And we do need to stop shouting out for the pick-it-up person, just put your hand up and wait until they come to you.
DeleteIf we find any bubble wrap, we could wash it very carefully. Afterwards you could gently write numbers/dates on each bubble. Then you will have a bubble wrap calendar! Just remember to pop each bubble every day!
ReplyDeleteRoom4 did so good
ReplyDeleteI admire how respectfully you are all treating the planet, Room4. A little saying we remember in our household is:
ReplyDeleteUse it up
wear it out
make it do
or do without!
