The Strongest Bridge Tech Challenge

We were faced with another challenge in technology today - to build a bridge to cross an imaginary river!  "We'll find out who can build the strongest bridge by stacking books on your bridge until it collapses", said Miss Simpson.  Here is the information we were given before starting our challenge:

  • 'river' is 40cm wide
  • equipment:  straws, sellotape, icecream container lid and newspaper
  • tools:  rules, pens and scissors
  • good communication with group members is the key to avoiding an epic fail
  • choose your own groups
  • create strong poles by tightly rolling the newspaper

We were all VERY nervous before our bridges were tested.  We could not believe how strong some of them were!  Congratulations to Tyler, Cameron and Jensen for building a bridge that could hold ten books!  Well done Levi, Leah, S and Logan for building the 'prettiest' bridge too!  Here are the final results:

YELLOW DAY

On Thursday Halcombe School celebrated Daffodil Day by all dressing in yellow. We paraded around at 9am and donated a gold coin to the Cancer Society.

Costumes ranged from yellow rugby socks to wearing a yellow rubbish bag as a dress. It was an outrageous day to have fun, dress up and give to an awesome charity.
Well done to all those who put an effort into dressing up. We look forward to Yellow Day again next year!

WHAT A GREEN DAY

Environmental Education

This afternoon lots was going on in the environment.

During lunch time the Green Team planted trees for our school bush walk and did a fabulous job.
In the afternoon Room 4 visited our own garden and then picked up our buddy class Room 1 for a walk to the Halcombe Village.
We explained to our young buddies what the word environment is and why it is important to look after the environment. We then got a buddy each, plastic bag and gloves and carefully walked down to the village searching for rubbish. In some areas we did not need to search hard as it was everywhere.

GYMNASTICS CONCLUSION

This term we have been doing Gymnastics. On Thursday morning we celebrated our successes by sharing one of the best things we can do to the class. Take a look at some of our gymnasts.

EARTHQUAKE AT SCHOOL

This afternoon we experienced a 6.2 earthquake at school. We took this very seriously and all of our danger drills paid off. At the time we were working at our desks then suddenly we felt the big shake. The lights swayed and the ground shook making our heads go a little dizzy. We covered our heads correctly under the tables, listened and waited so fantastically to our teacher’s instructions. Once Miss Campbell instructed that it was safe to move we silently went and assembled to the front court. Next the roll was taken and we still sat without talking.
We felt safe because we listened to calm instructions and stuck together.
