SPECIAL FRIDAY AFTERNOON

Today the Senior Team had a very special afternoon.

It all started with a delicious lunch made and provided by Halcombe School. We had sausages, vegetables- including our school-grown pumpkin, eggs from the chickens, and potatoes. What feast!!

After lunch we watched the fantastic drama group perform their play to us about how to play fair when playing patter-tennis. Ka Pai actors!

We then performed our Te Reo Kori to each other. The girls did rakau and the boys the haka. All the practice paid off.

We finished our awesome afternoon with a patter tennis competition.

What an afternoon to remember!

PREPARE FOR RUBBISH ART

Right Room 4 lets do something with all the lunch rubbish we find in our lunch boxes!
From today (Wednesday) onwards any plastic rubbish that can be clean, needs to stay in Room 4 to use in Art next week.
Get collecting then get creative!

EXPERT VISITOR

Today we had guest speaker, Helen from Horizons Regional Council, come and speak to Room 3 and 4.

She spoke to us about pollution and the effects of pollutants in our waterways.

She got us to pour a range of pollutants into a bowl of clear fresh water - it was disgusting what ends up in the ocean! Poor fish!

Thank you Helen for helping us find out more about our polluted environment, and how we can help it.

Lets become experts and using Te Reo Maori for the days of the week!

PERIMETER AND AREA DILEMMA

Last week a maths group investigated how area and perimeter are different. We found that even if two shapes have the same perimeter it does not mean that both shapes have the same area.
As a follow up to this learning, children presented their understandings using ICT.

GREAT FIND WILLOW!

LIBRARY MONDAY NOT TUESDAY

A reminder that for JUST next week we have changed our library day due to a special expert visitor joining us in Room 4 Tuesday.

MAKE SURE you bring your library books to school MONDAY!

TECH CHALLENGE

Today’s challenge was to build a ramp! We would find out the winner of the challenge by rolling a marble down the ramp – the team that could make it roll the furthest would win! We knew it would be hard to make our ramps stand up – it was, and there were one or two epic fails! Congratulations to Emma, Azi, Regan and Georgia – the winning team. Here is a video of the ‘rolling action’!

COMPASS GROUP LEARNING

The Room 4 Compass Group have been learning to understand that perimeter and area are different. Watch this space to see their understand through digital presentations.
Keep up the exciting investigations Room 4!

SIGN LANGUAGE

It is sign language week!
Every morning we have been learning sign language to start our day.

Children please comment below explaining what you now know in sign language.

Here is a video of us singing "Happy Birthday" in sign.

HOW CAN WE HELP OUR POLLUTED ENVIORNMENT?

This term we are inquiring about "How we can help our polluted environment?"

After learning about the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch" we wanted to see how much plastic rubbish we had in our lunchboxes today.
We also decided we need to make sure plastics are not getting out to sea from our Halcombe community. We have come up with a plan: We will go around Halcombe every Thursday for 10mins after lunch to collect rubbish. This is a great start for how we can help our polluted environment.

Once we realised the amount of plastic Room 4 uses within a week, we decided we need to try a lot better to pack in a environmental friendly way.

AIM: to reduce the use of non-biodegradable rubbish in our lunchboxes

HOW WE THINK WE CAN ACHIEVE THIS:

·       Choose foods that do not have a package if possible

·       Replace glad-wrap for recyclable materials i.e. paper, or use a container if there is one at home

·       When packing our lunch, think to ourselves: “Can I use this wrapping more than once?” and ask “Is it really that important that this piece of food is to be wrapped or bagged?”

We think this is a great start towards helping our polluted environment.

GARDEN GIFT

Thank you SO much Ben and Ben's mum - Ms Bisman for donating plants to our class for our class garden.
We really appreciate your help and kindness.
Ben, perhaps your mum would like to join us when it comes to harvesting and eating these delicious veges!

SHARING OUR GARDEN GOODS WITH OUR WHANAU

We were surprised that our garden was still growing over the holiday. Miss Campbell took Room4 out to see the overgrown garden. We decided that each child should get to take home some delicious spinach. Also the green team members in Room4 got to take home some cucumber to go with the spinach. We thought it was a great idea to share it with our family at home instead of Room4 making up our own meals this time.  We all had a great time sharing our veges with our families.

HALCOMBE GOT A BLUE RIBBON!

Halcombe School entered to the Manawatu Garden & Lifestyle Festival Schools Competition over the weekend. After many hours planning, painting, cutting, sculpting, spraying and gluing Our creative Halcombe School children produced an awesome alligator that came home with a second place blue ribbon! We were awarded with a $100 voucher to spend at Mauways Nursery.

The alligator is on display this week in the office for everyone to see. A massive thank you to all those children who contributed to this creature.

TECH CHALLENGE

We've just had another tech challenge with Miss Simpson. This time the mission was to create a carriage for Marge Simpson (a small plastic toy, not the real one). This carriage needed to transport Marge safely down the 'mountain'. The hardest part of the challenge was figuring out how to hook our carriages onto the rope. Our teamwork and construction skills are definitely improving - lots of groups were successful with this challenge! Well done! Check out the video:

THIS PROBLEM GOT US ALL!

We are soooooo proud of ourselves that we persisted and got it in the end.
Scales and Compass groups comment below to tell the story of how we went with this problem, what you missed and what you got stuck on.
What a fun problem!
(It got Miss Campbell for a second too)

Check out us solving Mrs Simpson's rose garden fence problem:

INTRODUCTION TO MEASUREMENT

During maths today we showed Miss Campbell our measurement skills. We did a "starting point" test and also showed our measurement knowledge with a practical activity.
We had to estimate lengths of pieces of strings. We used connect blocks as our unit. We learnt to find the range of estimations from our group estimations. Later we measured the actual length of each string then converted how many blocks to how many centimeters long they were. We double checked by using our ruler.
It was interesting to see all the different estimation. We can't wait to learn our measurement this term.
