RELATING TO OTHERS

Today Room 4 were given social scenarios that they discussed in their peers and respond to.
Respond to the last two scenaries by posting on this post.

Scenario: You and your mates love playing rugby on the field at lunch. Sometimes they say that you are a stink tackler and this hurts your feelings. You want to be a better tackler. What could you do?

Your responses:

-          Say to them “how would you feel if I said that to you?”

-          Say in a big voice “Stop saying that. I don’t like it!”

-          Stand up for yourself

-          Take a ball home to practice with

-          Ask your coach for some rugby tricks to practice with your family

Scenario: The teacher gives a lot of instructions at the beginning of the day. Josh, who sits next to you, often whispers to you during this time and sometimes you can’t hear the instructions. What could you do?
Your responses:

-          Say “Please stop that”

-          Say “I need to listen to the teacher”

-          Say “Please stop, I’m listening to the teacher”

-          Tell him to be quite

-          Say “Please stop or I will have to tell the teacher and you’ll have to be moved”

Blog scenario 1:
You have lots of friends. Sarah says you should stop being friends with Grace. What could you do?

Blog scenario 2:
You are showing your cousin Room 4’s blog. He sometimes thinks he is really ‘cool’ and tonight is one of those times. He starts typing an inappropriate comment on a post. What could you do?

40 HOUR FAMINE

Congratulations to all those who took part in the 40 hour famine!
Children slept in boxes, went without food, technology and even without eating. Ka Pai kids!

Today those involved celebrated their success with a scrumptious shared lunch.

A special thank you to Nelly and Grace in Room 6 for leading this World Vision organisation for Halcombe School this year.

ART EXPLORING

On Friday afternoon we tried thinking outside the box when using a variety of art materials, tools and textures in art. Now that we are more confident in creating creative mark making and patterns we will plan our background to our “James Cook” artwork.

It was fantastic to see all the children find out how to be creative by themselves.

These are some pictures of our exploring:

READING CHALLENGE

Room 4 had a reading challenge. We all made goals to be committed to our novel by reading every night for a certain amount of time.
We set times when we would read at home and then recorded the times and pages that we read in our Kit Book reading log.
Cameron- From now on I am going to try and read half an hour a night instead of watching tv programmes
Ella- I achieved my goal by reading my chapter book every night
Azi- I read my novel on the bus
Tahu- Now I feel more comfortable at reading
Emma- I read every night and it came to a total of a hundred minutes
Jensen- I achieved my goal by reading 1-3 hours a day for a total of 6 days
Jessica- I got really committed to my chapter book because I remember what I was reading because I was reading it all the time
Because we are all trying so hard to get into fantastic home reading routines and being committed to our novels we had “Milo and Novel” sharing time. We shared our favourite parts of our books while enjoying a steamy hot milo.
We are going to keep up our hard work and keep committed to our reading!

RECIPROCAL READING GROUP

A group of students have been learning to do Reciprocal Reading. Reciprocal Reading is a student-lead learning group which extends our reading skills.
The children have worked with the teacher learning to – PREDICT, CLARIFY, QUESTION, and SUMMARISE a range of text. This week was the first time they got to lead it without teacher input.
Tyler was the leader this week. They all did such a great job!

COUCH TALK

This is our introduction to “Couch Talk”.

The main part of Couch Talk this week was to recall information found in the school newsletter.

When we do this again we think we need to:
· Look straight at who we are talking to (-camera audience or peers)
· To be more confident. If you mix up your words, keep calm and try saying what you mean again.
· Try not to fiddle
· Add a feeling or opinion

MATHS AS A METAPHOR

This week for writing we shared our view of Mathematics by making connections and comparisons to a food. Room 4 worked very hard to think creatively and all published their writing with an appropiate image.
Here are some fantastic finish products.

If mathematics was a food it would be noodles. Noodles are tricky to get on my fork. But there is a trick to get them on your fork easily. Maths equations are tricky to solve but there are also tricks to solve them. When you are working out a maths equation you’re working out is messy, so is when you are eating noodles because your noodles look all messy and tangled around other noodles. But they are delicious to eat. After I eat all the noodles I always want more. Like I always want more maths equations once I’ve solved them all because maths is fun to do.
I know they are hard to eat because they won’t get on your fork but they sure are yummy. I love to eat noodles like I love to solve maths equations.
WRITTEN BY SOPHIE

If mathematics was a food it would be chilli. When you eat chilli your body automatically heats up. When you do maths your body also heats up because you are getting hotter and hotter due to thinking so hard. Chilli is very slippery and sometimes when you eat it you have an explosion in your mouth like an explosion of numbers in your head when doing maths.
Chilli is can be soggy and messy. Maths can also be messy and confusing. I never really liked the heat in chilli meals but now I can handle the heat. I never really liked maths but now I LOVE it and can handle the maths challenges.
WRITTEN BY CAMERON

If maths was a food it would be a double scoop of ice cream. Adding toppings is like maths. There are 100s of sprinkles on ice cream like the amount of numbers in maths. Ice cream can be a challenge to eat because of the coldness of it. You can get brain-freeze and if I work really hard in maths my brain can freeze too. When I was younger I had trouble eating an ice cream like I did in maths. I had that problem eating ice cream because it got really messy fast. When ice cream comes with a cone you need to crack through it like a maths problem.
Ice cream can get annoying because of the melting pieces that come off the side and drip onto your hand. This is like when numbers jump into your brain, and then they fall out so you forget them. Also ice cream disappears like numbers in subtraction, sooner than you know!

BOOKS AND BIKKIES

Today was the first Books and Bikkies day.

Mrs Christiansen takes a group of children interested in sharing their novels with others once a week. In this time they enjoy discussing books, recommend books and eat bikkies.

Well done to those who read their chapter book in the holidays and were able to share their book.

I hope you didn't eat all those biscuits!

ORAL LANGUAGE TERM 2

This term to develop our Oral Language skills we are having “Couch Talk”.

Couch Talk is a recorded small group discussion about what is going on at Halcombe School and Room 4 each fortnight. They will retell the newsletter and become confident to speak about a variety of topics.

Children will learn to:

- Use a clear and loud enough voice

- Ask and answer questions from their peers

- Express opinions and feelings

- Identify and recall factual information

- Participate confidently in discussion

- Begin to use humour

Keep an eye out for the first Couch Talk clip which will be posted next week.
