Next week, Room 4 will be hosting their first whole school assembly. We will be the icing on the cake after what will be an entertaining gymnastics display.
Make a point to be there to support the superb team of Room 4 students!

SOUTH MAK SPORTS EXCHANGE
Some of our wonderful Room 4 sportspersons represented Halcombe School on the sports exchange today. With beautiful weather and slippery fields, it was a recipe for some fantastic teamwork and entertainment. Here are a few highlight photos...
Ben, Mataora, and Tommy obviously made the most of the conditions!
They were a tough team, but the B Rugby team managed to hold the opposition to a draw.
Georgia, Fritha, Emma and Willow were all very useful to the Netball B team!
All in all, a very memorable experience for all!

MATHEX MASTERS!
Wednesday saw the school Mathex competition put on my the students who represented our school in Manawatu Mathex this year, and Mrs Simpson. It was tense, the teams very quick to realise that in order to win they had to work as a team under time pressure.
Ash and Willow work with their team (Jack and Jasmine) to solve the problems. (Obviously they were enjoying the challenge!)
The teams had to complete a few practical tasks, and then work together to solve a series of mathematical problems as quick as they could. Eventually we found our Halcombe School Mathex Masters (The winning team) who all received a chocolate bar prize for their efforts.
Congratulations to the Mathex reps who conducted the occasion with the necessary formality!

Holly and Danielle are doing what they can to handle the pressure with their team mates.
Congratulations to Georgia and Ben who were part of the winning team! Keep working at those maths challenges, everyone. You might be our school representatives next year!

STUNNING STATISTICS!
Statistics is about collecting data to find the TRUTH! We are more confident now in graphing our data in different ways, but we have also found out about Microsoft Excel and the graphs we can make using this software. Superb! Here is a graph that was made by some of Room 4's awesome mathematicians.
Then we chose a mission for each group (which they chose to accept before it self-destructed!)
1] Which supermarket is the most preferred? We could prove we are their best customers and they might choose to support our school!
2] What is the most preferred chocolate flavour? This would help us maximise the chocolate fundraising for our school by not choosing flavours of chocolate that nobody wants (if there is such a flavour!)
3] What is the most preferred fizzy flavour? This will help us buy efficiently for the school disco!
Here are the results and our analysis:

AWESOME MEMORISATION!
Awesome Holly and Georgia! Not only did they manage to complete their challenge of memorising a poem but they also dramatised it and performed it at assembly last week. Here is their rendition of 'Forgiven' by AA Milne. (Complete with beetle!)
Superb, girls. You did Room 4 proud!

Competition gets the best out of us!
Competition is exciting! In a competition you discover your very best ability and you can even surprise yourself. We have celebrated the victories and surprises of the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. We have noticed the athletes' preparation, practice and performance, and we are very proud of them as the sporting ambassadors of our country!
We've watched their example and matched their role model to the wisdom we have been thinking about in our classroom. What makes a great champion? These role models aren't just remembered for their gold medals, but more so for their humility and good manners in their victory.
Here is the wise advice we would give to future Commonwealth Games and Olympic athletes who will represent our country:
Use your feelings to drive yourself to your next success.
Don't blame anyone else. It won't change the result and only sours the occasion.
Don't give up! Never say never!
Celebrate the game, not just the result. Congratulate the winners.
Find your mistakes and fix them. Perfect practice makes perfect!
People remember your good manners more than your failures.
Congratulate the opposition. Without them you wouldn't have reached your goal.
Friendships are more important than any opposition or competition.
Bragging only build yourself up at others' expense.
Bad manners destroys any competition.
Encourage the opposition to keep trying. They are your biggest motivation to improve!

The art of facing challenges...
Our inquiry into the Commonwealth Games has centred around challenges and the way "Competition gets the best out of us."
We've even begun to attack some of our own challenges in areas that are not just about sport, but art, thinking and music as well! I am already amazed at the determination of children in our class to master a new challenge.

We've even begun to attack some of our own challenges in areas that are not just about sport, but art, thinking and music as well! I am already amazed at the determination of children in our class to master a new challenge.
Challenges include:
- Memorise the 6 verses of the poem "Forgiven." by A.A. Milne.
Forgiven
By A. A. Milne
I found a little beetle; so that Beetle was his name,
And I called him Alexander and he answered just the same.
I put him in a match-box, and I kept him all the day ...
And Nanny let my beetle out -
Yes, Nanny let my beetle out -
She went and let my beetle out -
And Beetle ran away.
I put him in a match-box, and I kept him all the day ...
And Nanny let my beetle out -
Yes, Nanny let my beetle out -
She went and let my beetle out -
And Beetle ran away.
She said she didn't mean it, and I never said she did,
She said she wanted matches and she just took off the lid,
She said that she was sorry, but it's difficult to catch
An excited sort of beetle you've mistaken for a match.
She said she wanted matches and she just took off the lid,
She said that she was sorry, but it's difficult to catch
An excited sort of beetle you've mistaken for a match.
She said that she was
sorry, and I really mustn't mind,
As there's lots and lots of beetles which she's certain we could find,
If we looked about the garden for the holes where beetles hid -
And we'd get another match-box and write BEETLE on the lid.
We went to all the places which a beetle might be near,
And we made the sort of noises which a beetle likes to hear,
And I saw a kind of something, and I gave a sort of shout:
'A beetle-house and Alexander Beetle coming out!'
It was Alexander Beetle I'm as certain as can be,
And he had a sort of look as if he thought it must be Me,
And he had a sort of look as if he thought he ought to say:
'I'm very very sorry that I tried to run away.'
And Nanny's very sorry too for you-know-what-she-did,
And she's writing ALEXANDER very blackly on the lid,
So Nan and Me are friends, because it's difficult to catch

- Learn to play the song "Ode to Joy" on a piano or keyboard, using BOTH HANDS.
- Complete the SOMA cube puzzle within 15 seconds
- Sing a "round" with a team of 7 other voices.
- In a team of 6, and without any supporting props, hold a position for 30 seconds with only 4 feet and 2 hands touching the ground.
- Use 'Tiddlywink' counters to land your counter nearest to the 'Jack' on a wooden table, competing with another person.
Remember, you can do it!

MOVE DOWN THE BUS!
Mr Tongs joined Room 4 this week while Miss Campbell is away. Mr Tongs has a few musical bones in his body, and very quickly the Room 4 students were singing a new song. Even a few parents caught them humming at home! It didn't take them long to master the words and the melody - some even know it off by heart already! They helped teach it to the senior team for team singing this week.
We hope you like our rendition of the song.

FLOODWATERS!
It wasn't a disaster! No, it was a new maths game that used a lot of chance and a little bit of strategy. It also helped us to think multiplicatively! Using rectangles made from our basic facts we had to cover a grid of squares in the fastest way possible. By throwing two dice we determined the size of our rectangle, then we chose where that rectangle would fit in our grid. On the way we discovered THERE ARE SOME VERY COMPETITIVE CHILDREN IN OUR CLASSROOM! After a few days of pleasant practice, we held a tournament to find the champion floodwater player. It was very tense!
We used a MS Excel spreadsheet to set out our draw. We could see who our champions were as each round was played.
Finally, after finding out that Fritha came in third place (after a close game with Zoe), it came down to the final game between Jessie and Holly T. Well done, Jessie!

Gymnastics in our new hall!
We've been mastering some new skills with the help of some parents and a wonderful new hall to work in. The children have been concentrating hard, and showing some finesse and finishing as they have completed 6 stations of gymnastic activity. Ka pai to Danielle, Fritha, Georgia, and Mataora who have achieved some excellent routines. We are nearly ready for next weeks challenges!

CELEBRATE: BASIC FACTS
We have been working REALLY hard at school and home to learn our multiplication and division basic facts. Everyday we pair up and have 2 minutes of testing each other from our 'triangle chart'. This has been very exciting! Some of us know ALL multiplication and division facts from our chart now! Congratulations! A special congratulations to Willow who won the first prize for recalling ALL multiplication and division facts correctly every time to a buddy and Miss Campbell.
Keep up the fantastic learning and practicing everyone!
Miss Campbell can't wait to see how well you all do in your next basic facts test.

LIBRARY
Today during our library time we did a range of things.
Every week we start our session with two students
recommending and answering questions about their books. But then today we went
further! Our H-O-T reading group (higher order thinking group) budded up with
other classmates to question them about their pukapuka. The questions were tricky
which helped us see if we understand what we are reading.
We also made sure that everyone used both Maori and sign
language when returning and issuing our books.
We will keep up our amazing reading and commitment to our
chapter books over the holidays!
